And of course huge THANKS to all of you guys who commented and faved! I will read all your comments and try to comment back.. Though don't get upset if I'll reply with just "thanks" to some of you.. There are so many comments and I have so small amount of time to read them that It's pretty impossible for me to write long replies to every one of you.

Instead of writing down my thoughts about this piece I would like to ask you what do you see in it?
What deep message do you think it contains? :meditate:
Or is it just another pointless picture? :slow:

Please share your opinion in comments. =)

It's kinda hard to critique a work like this without knowing your intentions in creating it. If it doesn't actually mean anything, then who can say the concept didn't work?

As for the visual presentation, the image is quite attractive and the perspective you created couldn't have been better. You've done well with the shapes and coloring, and in most cases, the shading. The background shading could use more work to smooth it out. The horizon line, as well, I think needs to be more defined. If it's a curved joining of surfaces, the fade would be softer. If it's a right angle, it should be sharper. You seem to have been trying to depict it both ways, which is confusing. The metal band of the pencil also seems unfinished, missing that standard crimped pattern, and lacking shading.

There are some very nice detail touches that don't go unnoticed: the wrinkles at the lower bends of the pencil, the sides of the sharpener that reveal the plastic cylinder actually has thickness ( that "smoky" gray color we all know so well is perfect), and the glare and shading on the sharpener cap.

Over all, it's a very interesting and engaging image. It's depicted as a conundrum, so I enjoy it that way, without trying to discern any "meaning" from it. There is one thing that keeps me from seeing this as the realistic - though fanciful - image you created; that is that the pencil is hovering. It drives me nuts(!) because there's no reason for it, given the deftly executed realism it's presented in, and no real law of physics would allow it. If it were paired with another example of physics-run-amuck in the image, it may then seem less peculiar, but as it is...my mind just stops at that aspect of the image, that question that's unanswered..."Why and How is it hovering?"

My final comment is that it's a fine example of that "Think outside the box" way of seeing things that we hear so much about these days. It's been done in art for centuries, and has inspired even the most passive viewer to expand their perceptions of the world around them. I would encourage you to nurture that aspect of your thinking process, to keep asking "What if?" and "Why not?", and saying things like "Wouldn't it be really cool if..." You're clearly already a talented artist, and possess the skill of using CG tools to express yourself and your ideas. That pretty much makes anything you want possible. And also, take your time...be certain that it's the best you can do before you call it "Finished".
